As a mother in Milwaukee, I have to say that I am SO PLEASED that the city is facing the infant mortality crisis it is experiencing head-on.
Say what they will, hoity-toity white people, about the benefits of co-sleeping. That’s not the issue here. Consciously and safely sleeping with your baby is NOT the issue here.
Here’s the issue: babies are dying. In some areas, at rates worse than in third world countries. Be it because mothers can’t afford safe cribs or pack-n-plays, or be it because there are drugs involved, or be it because mothers are uninformed about safety in co-sleeping, it really doesn’t matter to me. Co-sleeping in any of those circumstances is unsafe and irresponsible.
That is what these ads are fighting against.
Also, SIDS is a secondary issue here, but is still an issue. I am so sick of hearing about how “all of our babies managed to survive and they all slept on their tummies…” from every pre-1990’s mother I come across. You know who’s not saying that? The mothers whose babies died of SIDS. FYI that there has been a DRASTIC decrease (I don’t have the time now to look up the actual number) in SIDS deaths since the “Back to Sleep” campaign began.
And with that, I must tend to my boys; the naughty one just woke up the nice one after a whomping 40-minute nap :(
